WASHINGTON, Mo. (Oct. 15, 2008) – Until last Saturday, Pro Modified racer Scott Ray had not made a quarter-mile run in less than six seconds. When that changed at the Virginia NHRA Nationals, Ray took such a liking to the 5-second range that he kept his 1953 Corvette-bodied car built by Andy McCoy Race Cars there the rest of the weekend and advanced to his first final-round appearance.

“We are happy to see how well Scott performed in Virginia,” Andy McCoy said. “He’s an excellent driver and we’re glad one of our cars is in his hands. His team does a great job in race preparation and that string of 5-second runs is evidence of that.”

Ray took advantage of good weather conditions and made a career-best 5.96-second run in qualifying Saturday and started ninth in the 16-car field. The driver of the Ohio Crankshaft-sponsored car then bettered that mark later in the day with a blistering 5.91-second run at 238.22 mph in the first round of eliminations. It was the quickest elapsed time of eliminations.

Ray made three more sub-six second runs on Sunday en route to finishing runner-up to 2006 series’ champion Jay Payne in the finals. He moved up to ninth in the JEGS Pro Mod Challenge standings as a result. The final event of the 10-race JEGS Pro Mod Challenge begins Oct. 30 in Las Vegas.
