Washington, Mo. (May 4, 2009) – His work day lasted just a few seconds Sunday, but race car builder Andy McCoy enjoyed getting back behind the wheel of a Pro Modified car at the O'Reilly NHRA Midwest Nationals in Madison, Ill. Returning to the track after a two-year absence, McCoy is subbing for veteran campaigner Scott Ray, who is recovering from bypass surgery, and is looking forward to racing again in the Get Screened America Pro Mod Challenge series at Bristol, Tenn. in two weeks.

“I really appreciate Scott, Stan and Mary for giving me the opportunity to drive the car in Scott’s absence,” McCoy said. “It’s just taking me a little time to get acclimated to the car because it’s making so much horsepower. My car never generated near as much power as this car.”

McCoy made two qualifying runs Saturday in the Ohio Crankshaft ‘53 Corvette originally built at his shop, but had problems getting down the track both times. “I got the car out of the groove on the first pass and had to pedal it a little and we smoked the tires at the hit of the throttle on our second run,” McCoy said. “I have some big shoes to fill trying to pick up where Scott left off and I’m a little rusty after being away for some time. They have a great race car and when they get Scott back in the driver’s seat things will be alright.”

McCoy wound up on the bump in the 16-car field and lost in the first round to top-qualifier Jay Payne when he experienced trouble getting the car into second gear.

McCoy will again be behind the wheel of Ray’s car at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals May 15-17. Ray suffered a heart attack Feb. 22 and is expected to be cleared to race in the very near future.

In lieu of racing lately, McCoy has been concentrating his efforts on his race car business. Based in Washington, Mo., Andy McCoy Race Cars specializes in the fabrication of high-performance Pro Mod and Top Sportsman drag racing components from chassis to competition-ready vehicles.
